Concord Gymnastics Club
History
The club was formed as a recreational gymnastics club for boys and girls in 1976 by Tom Rundle, who was a local teacher. Over the years the standard of gymnasts gradually improved until 1983 when Tony Smith took over as senior coach. He developed the boys side of the club until it was one of the strongest in the area. Not wanting to be left behind, the girls followed suit and the club grew in stature with both boys and girls succesfully competing in county, regional and national competitions. In 1989 the running of the club was taken over by John Molloy (still at the club) as Senior Girls coach, ably assisted by Jim Newall as Senior Boys coach.
Equipment
From our humble beginnings, with nothing other than willing coaches and enthusiastic gymnasts Concord now own 95% of the Olympic standard equipment that we use. The cost of replacing this equipment is in the region of £34,000 and it has been funded by :
Club fees
Internal and local sponsorship
Local and national grants
Donations.
Coaches
Like all gymnastic clubs, coaches are the backbone of the club. Without dedicated coaches there would be no dedicated gymnasts. All of our coaches are BG trained with some to county and/or regional level. We are also fortunate to have two qualified competion judges amongst our coaches. None of our coaches are paid for the considerable time they spend coaching at the club. Their reward is seeing the continuous improvement of their gymnasts.
